Fiat Chrysler Recalls 780,000 Minivans after Reported Fires

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling more than 780,000 minivans to repair problematic power window switches that have been linked to overheating incidents and fires.

Certain Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans from model years 2010 through 2014 are included in the around 780,477 vehicles in the recall, Reuters reported.

Dealers will replace the third-row power window switches, which have caused 36 reports of overheating. No accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue; Chrysler noticed the problem through warranty claims.

The switches tended to short circuit after being exposed to moisture from rain, snow, car washes or beverage spills.

"Some incidents involved fire, many did not," Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne told Reuters. "In each case, damage was confined to areas of the driver's door," which holds the power switch in question.

Of the recalled vans, around 644,850 were sold in the U.S., 106,980 in Canada, 8,009 in Mexico and 20,638 outside of North America, according to Reuters.

The automaker will notify owners when they can bring their vehicles in for repair; meantime, they can go to the dealer after May 14 to have the faulty switches disconnected.

In a separate recall, dealers will be making repairs to 4,141 Fiat 500e electric cars, which have faulty power inverter modules. The affected vehicles are from model years 2013 and 2014 and all were sold in the U.S.

The company is aware of five incidents where coolant leaking on electrical components led to power loss, but no accidents or injuries have been reported.
