The new 2015 Chevrolet Impala, which has bi-fuel capability, will start at $38,210 with shipping, General Motors has announced.
The bi-fuel model's launch marks the first time a North American manufacturer has produced a full-size sedan with the capability of running on both compressed natural gas and traditional gasoline, Edmunds.com reported.
Its recently announced price compares to the base gasoline-powered 2015 Chevrolet Impala LS, which starts at $27,735 with a destination charge of $825, GM spokesperson Emily Moran told Edmunds.
The new Chevy Impala is designed to burn the compressed natural gas first and then switch automatically to the traditional gas. According to company estimates, the car's range using both fuel sources should be around 500 city miles.
Expected to be available this winter, the new bi-fuel sedan will come in standard LS and higher-end LT trim levels. Both versions will feature a 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 230 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque while using compressed natural gas.
"That's about 88 percent of the horsepower produced when running on gasoline," Moran explained to Edmunds.
With a tank that holds about 7.8 gallons, the Impala should run 150 miles solely on compressed natural gas. While the car will switch to regular gas automatically, the driver can also control which gas source is used through a manual control on the dashboard.
Since Chevy is the first North American carmaker to launch a bi-fuel option, the new Impala doesn't have a lot of competition yet. Edmunds names the 2014 Honda Civic Natural Gas as its closest competitor for now, with a listing price of $27,430.
Natural gas under pressure is clear, odor-free and non-corrosive, offering a cleaner fuel option that reduces emissions put into the air, according to the California Energy Commission.
