The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI small cars among the safest vehicles after various crash tests.

The redesigned Subaru WRX platform received a score of "good" on all of the agency's crash tests, earning a 2014 Top Safety Pick Award, Edmunds.com reported.

Within their segment, the Subaru WRX and WRX STI compete with the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Mazda 3.

The WRX and WRX STI models earned scores of "good" on the newer small overlap front crash test, which involves the vehicle crashing into another vehicle or on object with the impact hitting the front corner of the car.

"In the small overlap test, the structure of the WRX held up, and the driver's space was maintained well," the IIHS said in a statement on Monday quoted by Edmunds.

"The dummy's movement was well-controlled, and measures taken from the dummy indicated a low risk of any significant injuries. The dummy's head made good contact with the front airbag, which stayed in position during the crash. The side airbag deployed with enough forward coverage to protect the head from contact with side structure and outside objects."

In the 2015 redesign, both the WRX and WRX STI include a driver's knee airbag among their safety features. Neither vehicle has been rated for safety yet by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The IIHS uses five tests to rate a vehicle's safety: moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints and seats. According to the agency's website, most cars rated poor or marginal for safety when the IIHS began crash test evaluations in 1995. Since then, safety has improved enough that the majority of vehicles earn good scores.
