Ford has issued a recall for nearly 4,000 F-Series trucks sold in the U.S. due to transmission issues that may put the vehicle in reverse when it's supposed to be in drive.

The recall, which should start early this month, comprises 3,973 trucks built from Sept. 13, 2013 through March 28, 2014, Edmunds.com reported.

The 2015 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks included in the recall are equipped with 6.2-liter gasoline or 6.7-liter diesel engines and 6R140 transmissions.

No accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the issue. The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the transmission calibration problem was discovered internally, and Ford had not received any field reports about the problem.

"An error with the transmission control software may be such that while shifting from 'Park' to 'Drive' the vehicle may display 'Drive' but possibly engage 'Reverse' for 1.5 seconds before engaging 'Drive,'" the NHTSA said in its summary of the problem, as quoted by Edmunds. "If the vehicle is in 'Reverse' while the while the gear selection shows 'Drive,' unexpected movement could occur, increasing the risk of a crash."

For the recall, dealers will provide a free update for the trucks' transmission software. Affected owners can contact Ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Because the recall should begin soon, Edmunds recommends that owners contact their Ford dealers soon to find out what to do next.
