The pickup truck just got more family-friendly.

For the all-new 2015 GMC Canyon, General Motors has added a simple but innovative safety feature for kids, Edmunds.com reported.

Bringing GM back into the midsize pickup segment, the Canyon will have removable headrests in the back seats that can be used to extend seat cushion length in order to accommodate child car seats.

Pickup trucks in this category generally don't have seats long enough to meet the recommendation of car seat makers, but the extended seats in the Canyon should meet safety requirements.

GM has a patent pending on the unique feature. According to the GM Authority blog, the removable headrests will also be part of the new Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup, the Canyon's platform twin.

"It's an elegant solution that makes efficient use of the limited space in the rear seat in this type of vehicle, by allowing us to adapt the seat cushion length for child-restraint installation," Eduardo Bugelli, GM safety performance team lead, said in a statement quoted by Edmunds.

"The additional seat cushion length provides more support to the child restraint, which helps to reduce the rotation and the risk of injury in a crash."

Pricing has not yet been announced for the Canyon, which is expected to hit showrooms this fall.

In other safety features, the Canyon will have an optional package with forward collision alert and lane-departure warning technology.
