Microsoft Corp has announced it will start selling its Xbox One video game console in China this September, according to Reuters.

The console will be sold through Microsoft's partnership with Chinese Internet TV company BesTV New Media Co, the company confirmed this week.

Later this year, the partners will also introduce a new program designed to help developers create, publish and sell Xbox One games in places like China and other markets where the console is available for purchase, according to a Microsoft statement.

In September 2013, Microsoft and BesTV formed a joint venture and invested $237 million in "family games and related services."

Earlier this month, Shanghai's government said console makers like as Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony Corp would be able to manufacture and sell consoles in China.

The companies can sell and manufacture consoles in China through "foreign-invested enterprises" in Shanghai's free trade zone, according to Reuters.

In 2000, China banned all game consoles, claiming they had a negative effect on the mental health of its youth.

In January the ban was lifted temporarily, and earlier this month the 14-year ban was lifted permanently.

Before the ban was lifted, consoles were pirated and smuggled into China, but they never really sold well, since Chinese gamers primarily use PC and mobile games.

Since launching its flagship device in November, Microsoft has sold more than 5 million Xbox One video game consoles to retailers around the world, according to Reuters.

Microsoft's announcement was first reported by Re/code on April 29.
