Toyota Sold Record-Breaking 10 Million Vehicles Last Fiscal Year

Toyota Motors has announced it sold over 10 million vehicles globally during its last fiscal year, setting a new all-time record for the auto industry.

Its fiscal year ended on March 31, 2014.

The automaker's global sales for fiscal 2013, including the Daihatsu and Hino brands, reached approximately 10,133,000 units, according to a company press release.

Industry analysts have already confirmed that no other automaker has ever surpassed 10 million vehicles during a 12-month period.

Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co., Toyota's main rivals, report its financial information on a calendar-year basis.

During calendar 2013, Toyota reached 9.98 million vehicles sold, beating out both Volkswagen (9.73 million) and GM (9.71 million).

The sales total allowed Toyota to retain its title as the largest automaker in the world for the second consecutive year, according to the release.

Toyota fell behind GM in 2011 after leading in sales from 2008 through 2010 as a result of disrupted production due to the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March of that year.

Before 2008, GM reported the best sales numbers for 77 consecutive years.

Though all three automaker have big expectations for 2014, most industry analysts believe Volkswagen will be next to reach the 10 million mark.
