Amazon will launch its long-rumored smartphone during the second half of 2014, according to a report by The Wall-Street Journal.

The internet retailer has been demonstrating versions of its handset to developers in Seattle and San Francisco recently.

If the company follows through, it would join a market largely dominated by Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc.

In order to stand out from the competition, Amazon will equip phones with screens that display three-dimensional images without the need for special glasses.

Amazon will likely announce the smartphone device sometime in June, and ship to stores around the end of September of October, according to The Wall-Street Journal, citing unidentified sources.

Samsung and Apple, which accounted for most of the smartphone market at one point, are currently struggling to maintain margins thanks to newer companies like Lenovo and Huawei.

Last fall, rumors swirled that Amazon might offer a free phone with or without a contract, according to USA Today.

Amazon has reportedly lined up two display makers for its smartphone, like Japan Display, which makes displays for Apple's iPhone 5c, and 5S.

Amazon has not commented publicly regarding the rumored smartphone device.

The company made hardware news earlier this month with the debut of its $99 Amazon Fire TV.
