Amazon Won't Offer Free Streaming TV Service, Despite Recent Speculation

Sorry TV fans, Amazon.com is reportedly not planning on offering a free streaming TV service, despite feeling pressure from companies like Hulu and Netflix, according to Reuters.

On March 28, Amazon spokeswoman Sally Fouts confirmed that there is no such plan in the works, despite recent speculation that Amazon was working on plans for a new TV service.

Rumors included the possibility that Amazon was going to launch its own streaming device, which they could have revealed at or right before a company news conference in New York scheduled for next week.

The Wall Street Journal released a report on March 27 that the online retailer was mulling over the idea of a free, add-supported streaming music and TV service.

Fouts shot down this rumor however.

"We have a video advertising business that currently offers programs like First Episode Free and ads associated with movie and game trailers, and we're often experimenting with new things," Fouts said in an e-mail to Reuters. "But we have no plans to offer a free streaming media service."

Currently, Amazon's streaming TV service is included as part of its $99-a-year Prime service.

The service offers unlimited two-day shipping for eligible items sold on Amazon.com.
