Cyclean: This Train Handle Disinfects Itself

Cyclean is an award-winning technology concept that could remove a lot of the grossness from public transportation.

First written about on the design site Inhabitat, the self-cleaning handle for trains and buses will disinfect itself between each traveler, giving commuters greater peace of mind.

The gadget, which won a Red Dot Award for Design Concept of 2014, cleans itself after each pull through a system of rough sponges and a liquid cleaning agent, Yahoo Tech reported.

"Cyclean reinvents the typical handle with a built-in cleaning function," the designers explained on the Red Dot website. "The handle strap can be rotated through a small plastic chamber that contains a rough sponge, a cleaning and disinfecting agent, and rollers."

The Cyclean isn't coming to public transportation anytime soon, but it could go a long way toward reducing the spread of bacteria and improving public health.

The strap disinfects itself when it feeds through the chamber, coming out clean. The sponge would need to be replaced and cleaning agent replenished on a regular basis.

The award-winning device, which could revolutionize cleanliness on public transportation, was designed by Li Jiyang, Liu Tao, Qiu Zhen, Zeng Jiayu and Zhou Shen, according to the Red Dot website.

Founded in 1955, the Red Dot Design Award competition received more than 15,550 applications from 70 countries last year.
