iPhones Reportedly Drain Battery Faster with iOS 7.1

The latest iOS update is reportedly a greater drain on battery life, some users complaining that their devices don't last as long with iOS 7.1.

Sounding off on Apple forums and Twitter, users say the update featuring new fixes and interface design changes has resulted in weaker battery life, the Los Angeles Times reported.

After analyzing various Apple devices, Ars Technica reported "a statistically significant drop in battery life" that was the most noticeable on the iPhone 5.

The new system has been installed at a record pace and is already on 21 percent of all iPhones and iPads, ZDNet.com reported.

While no distinct patterns have emerged, users have been vocalizing their battery issues online.

"My battery drains to 50 percent within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percent when on standby for 5 hours or so," a user wrote in an Apple support community.

One iPhone owner complained that the "overnight charge decreased from 100 percent to 30 percent" on an Apple discussion board.

"My iPhone 5S has been draining like crazy since the iOS 7.1 Update," said another user, as quoted by the L.A. Times.

The new iOS 7.1 marks the first update since iOS 7.0 launched in June 2013, according to Ars Technica.

The system redesign isn't a massive overhaul, but tech sites say it makes the device feel faster.

"iOS 7.1 isn't a drastic change, but it brings enough new design elements, performance improvements, and additional stability to the platform that it might just win over the remaining iOS 6 holdouts," Ars Technica described.
