BMW confirmed this week that it has seen a strong demand for its i8 hybrid sportscar that is set to go into series production this April

Customer deliveries will start in June, according to Reuters.

"Demand for the BMW i8 is already exceeding the planned production volume during ramp-up," BMW said in a statement on March 10.

 The German-automaker failed to give a specific figure for how many cars will be produced however, according to Reuters.

Electric and green vehicles still haven't caught on completely thanks to their limited vehicle range compared to diesel-powered or gasoline vehicles.

Automakers like Audi, General Motors, Toyota, Nissan, have cut back on electric-car plans or have started offering aggressive price cuts to help handle disappointing sales.

The 362-horsepower i8 is powered by a hybrid system, and will offer an operating range of up to 373 miles, according to BMW.

BMW claims the vehicle can speed up 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

The vehicle was unveiled at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Official fuel economy numbers based on North American testing have not been announced yet by the automaker.
