The new Samsung smartwatch will supposedly run on Tizen, not Google's Android operating system, according to USA Today.

The decision not to equip the smartwatch with Google's Android OS is Samsung's newest attempt to create more of its own software and services.

Samsung's new Gear watch, along with a new HTML5 version of the Tizen OS, will debut at the Mobile World Congress next week, according to USA Today, citing three people "familiar with the situation," who did not want to be identified.

"Samsung is trying to protect its own long-term interests, not fortifying Google's Android camp while building their own camp around Tizen," said Stuart Richens, vice president of digital media at Network Communications, which owns Apartment Finder, according to USA Today.

The South Korean-based company hasn't confirmed that the watch will debut at the event officially yet.

Tizen is an open-source effort that is attempting to develop a software platform for phones and other devices.

The service launched in 2013, and has a hard time picking up members since. On Feb. 12, the company revealed 15 new partners had signed on, including companies like SoftBank and Sprint.

"If Samsung releases more Tizen devices, that's potentially a big opportunity," Richens said. "If they make that move in a big way, we want to make sure we are there early."

Samsung debuted the first Gear smartwatch last year, which ran on Android, the first Google mobile OS that has since become a powerhouse in the smartphone market.
