Ferrari Teases Mysterious Debut To Be Unveiled on Wednesday

Ferrari has teased a new debut for Wednesday that doesn't seem to be either of its expected upcoming models, the SP FFX and the SP Arya.

The side profile in the teased image, which was posted on Twitter by Ferrari Magazine and retweeted by the official Ferrari account today, doesn't quite fit with either of the upcoming debuts, Jalopnik reported.

Both the SP FFX and the SP Arya are front-engined custom cars. Images of the SP Arya have leaked but don't seem to match the side profile teased today, while the SP FFX's "three GTO-style vents in the place of a fender swoosh" don't fit with the image either.

"The design looks something like a cross between an FF, an F12, and a 599 indicating we're either looking at a custom one-off built by Ferrari's Special Projects program, or we're looking at the much-awaited new Ferrari California," Jalopnik's Raphael Orlove said, noting at the time that the first guess was more likely.

According to a Jalopnik reader, the teaser could be heralding the new Ferrari California based on private correspondence that called the new vehicle the "F 149 M Project." An "M" in a car title usually stands for "modified," meaning the car is an updated version of an older model.

Motor Authority reported the upcoming debut last week, also calling it the "149 M Project."

The car will be seen online on Wednesday and make its official worldwide debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show on March 4.

The new California is expected to feature a turbocharged engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an infotainment upgrade.

The upcoming SP FFX is an all-wheel drive V12 supercoupe that has two transmissions and a top speed of more than 200 mph.
