2014 Auto Expo in India: Artist Hand-Paints Car Collection

A collection of five hand-painted vehicles designed by an Australian artist was revealed Thursday at the 2014 Auto Expo in India.

Christopher Hogan, an Australian artist and sculptor, designed and painted the cars for the RE60 Quadricycle Signature Collection, according to a press release.

"Colour is such an integral ingredient in the Indian way of life," Hogan said in the press release. "This was an important consideration in my finished creations. This is reflected in the Tiger, Lotus, Mango, Peacock and Banyan Tree vibrantly colored designs."

Hogan is a world-renowned artist whose work is collected in the Regional Art Galleries in Australia.

Motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj Auto commissioned the collection, and Hogan used Bajaj RE60 models as "canvasses" for the artwork.

The artist chose five national icons that would the best visual representations of India's cultural aesthetic.

"Hogan's style of painting is contemporary abstract, and each RE60 Quadricycle is a kaleidoscope of color and recognizable patterns that will certainly evoke a sense of excitement, playfulness and glee to even the most skeptical automobile aficionado," said the press release.

Bajaj Auto showcased a car for future production at this week's Auto Expo as well, launching the U Car on Wednesday, Business Standard reported.

While the model likely won't be commercially available for at least two more years, the U Car did point to future possibilities for Bajaj Auto, which has previously called itself "anti-car."

The two-seater will probably be priced somewhere between a motorcycle and a traditional car, according to Business Standard.

"A lot of effort" went into creating the new model, Joseph Abraham, technology head of Bajaj Auto, told Business Standard.

The car will have automatic transmission, a gasoline-powered engine and air-conditioning capability.
