If you're worried that your phone is tracking your every move, this upcoming app is the one for you.
Created by Rutgers University assistant professor Janne Lindqvist and a team, this app for Android will tell users when their phone's location is being accessed and what other app is using it, BGR reported.
The group of developers designed the app to scroll a large banner reading "Your location is accessed by [app name]" whenever an app taps into the GPS functionality of your smartphone.
Location tracking has become so common that people often don't realize which apps are using their phone's GPS.
According to MIT Technology Review, which detailed the team's findings, the group found that users were often surprised at which apps were collecting data. Lindqvist and the other researchers conducted a field study to show participants how often their location was being tracked.
The participants were shocked to discover that seemingly harmless apps on their phones were regularly accessing their phone's GPS functionality and that many apps didn't warn them about location tracking at all.
The report read, "our participants appreciated the transparency brought by our run-time disclosures and that because of the disclosures most of them had taken actions to manage their apps' location access," according to BGR.
Android users should be able to download the app through the Google Play Store in the next eight weeks.
Privacy has become a growing concern as more devices access users' location and other data. The AAA recently called for a driver's "Bill of Rights" since automakers have started putting connectivity in cars.
Maybe the next app will let users know if the National Security Agency is tapping their phones.
For now, consumers can look into the Blackphone, a new smartphone from a Switzerland-based tech partnership intended to protect users and their data from any form of snooping, even the NSA.
The phone is set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress on Feb. 24 in Barcelona, according to Mashable.
