The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced this week that the 2014 Honda CR-V compact SUV has earned a five-star overall safety rating.

The base CR-V received five stars in the side impact crash and front crash tests. It received four stars in the rollover crash test, according to NHTSA.

Standard equipment featured in every CR-V includes antilock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control system, side-curtain airbags with roll-over sensors, driver and front-passenger airbags, front seat air bags, according to Honda.

Honda re-designed the front seat to try reducing neck injuries if a rear collision occurs.

The CR-V competes with similar vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4.

Honda's 2014 CR-V also received "good" ratings in every crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The vehicle did receive a "marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test however.

The small overlap front crash test was created to see how vehicles would handle if its front corner hits with another vehicle or an object like a tree, according to the IIHS.
