General Motors confirmed this week the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze small car earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to Edmunds.

The latest Cruze earned five stars in front and side impact tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The score could be attributed to the optional Enhanced Safety package offered for the Cruze LT, Diesel, Eco and LTZ models.

Chevy's Cruze competes with similar vehicles like the 2014 Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, and Ford Focus.

Chevy's Enhanced Safety package comes with rear cross-traffic alert, rear side blind zone alert, and side blind zone alert, according to GM.

The package is available for $790.

The 2014 Cruze received "good" ratings in every crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It did earn a "marginal" rating in the difficult small overlap front crash test, however, according to Edmunds.

The small overlap crash test was designed to replicate what could happen when the front corner of a vehicle hits an object like a tree or utility pole, or another vehicle.
