BMW Concept Active Tourer Production Model to Hit Showrooms in 2015

A production model of the BMW Concept Active Tourer will hit showrooms in the U.S. by early 2015.

The currently unnamed BMW crossover will compete with similar vehicles like the 2015 Audi Q3 and 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA. Both of those models go on sale this fall, according to Edmunds.

"The Concept Active Tourer will come to the United States in early 2015," Ludwig Willisch, BMW North America president and CEO, said to Edmunds at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. "It is very important to get younger customers into our camp. We still have the youngest customer base and we want to make sure it stays that way."

Though Willisch wouldn't confirm a release date, the production vehicle could debut this March at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show.

Most media outlets believe the vehicle will either be called the 1 or 2 Series Active Tourer.

The plug-in hybrid crossover is being designed to attract young car buyers looking to purchase either their first or second car.

Willisch said buyers are "looking for versatility that matches his or her lifestyle," he said. The new crossover "has space inside to carry anything, a baby carriage, golf bags, hockey stuff, surf boards, whatever," according to Edmunds.

The vehicle's powertrain is expected to include a lithium-ion battery pack, a 1.50liter three-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and produce 109 hp.

An all-wheel drive option will be made available as well.

Size wise, the vehicle is expected to be smaller than the BMW X1, according to Edmunds.
