One suspect is in police custody after a shooting occurred at Purdue University, according to the school's Twitter account.

The shooting took place at 12:00 p.m.

The university recently confirmed that the shooting occurred at the Electrical Engineering Building, according to CNN.

One person was shot dead during the incident, according to campus police Chief John Cox. The identity of the victim has not been revealed yet.

Purdue spokesman Greg McClure said that police have not confirmed if any other individuals were were injured during the incident, according to the Associated Press.

The university issued a text alert to students and faculty members advising them to take shelter while police investigate the campus.

"Shooting reported on campus; Bldg. Electrical Engineering; avoid area; shelter in place," read the text message, according to USA Today.

Over 40,000 students attend Purdue University, according to AP.

Police are still investigating the area at press time.

Gun laws in the U.S. have been a controversial topic since December 2012, when 20 children and six faculty members were killed by a shooter at Sandy Hook elementary in Connecticut.
