Ford is recalling approximately 46,000 Edge SUVs worldwide over fuel leak concerns, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If a fuel leak were to occur, the vehicles could catch fire at any given time.

Affected vehicles were produced from Sept. 2010 through April 2013. Each model is equipped with 2.0L engines.

Over 27,800 of the vehicles are in the U.S. and around 3,400 are sold in Canada. Ford confirmed 13,500 have been sold in the Asia Pacific region as well.

"The fuel line pulse damper metal housing may crack as a result of an improper manufacturing process. A cracked fuel line pulse damper housing may result in a combination of fuel odor, seepage, or a continuous leak while the fuel system is pressurized," Ford said to NHTSA.

At least 24 warranty claims for fuel leaks in the Edge vehicles produced after the Edge was previously recalled in 2012 have been received by the automaker.

The initial recall was deiced to fix a crack in the fuel line pump damper metal housing, thanks to damage suffered during production, according to the NHTSA.

At least 5,800 vehicles were a part of the original recall.

An investigation into the vehicles started back in June. Ford said owners will be notified by Feb. 28.

Dealers are being instructed to replace fuel lines, free of charge.
