Samsung has introduced a new app that encourages drivers to keep their hands off their phones and on the wheel through a reward system.

Called "Eyes on the Road," the Android app is a game that prevents users from looking at their phones while driving and lets them build up points for using it, Quartz reported.

The app works by determining the driver's speed; at or faster than 12 mph, the app hides all phone calls, texts and notifications.

According to VentureBeat, the app uses the phone's sensor fusion technology and cell towers to track driving speed. Eyes on the Road can also send auto-reply texts to any messages received.

Once a user has reached the destination and the phone has been idle for 10 minutes, the app will deactivate and reveal all notifications. The app can't tell if a user is a driver or passenger, but it can also be turned off manually.

Drivers who use the app can rack up points, which can be used for insurance premiums or gas pump discounts.

Not yet available in the United States, Eyes on the Road is being tested in Singapore. Quart points out that the location may be due to Singapore's risky driving habits. Samsung launched a safe driving campaign in November after a survey found that 80 percent of Singapore drivers have used their phones while driving.

U.S. drivers have trouble keeping away from their phones as well. More than 77 percent of young American adults think they can "safely" text while driving, even though texting behind the wheel make their chances of crashing as much as 23 times more likely, according to Quartz's report.
