New Mexico School Shooting: 4 Injured, Gunman Was a Student

A gunman opened fire at a New Mexico middle school earlier today, Jan. 14, and authorities have confirmed four students were injured during the incident.

Two of the students are in critical condition, according to the Associated Press. The suspected shooter, a student at the school, has been placed under arrest.

The identity of the shooter has not been confirmed at this time.

Shots were fired around 8 a.m., local time, at the Berrendo Middle School, in Rosewell, New Mexico.

The University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas confirmed that a 14-year-old boy was flown there in
"critical condition" along with a 13-year-old girl, who was in serious condition.

The boy was supposedly the shooter's target, hospital spokesman Eric Finley said. He was shot twice in the face and the girl was shot in the arm, according to a student witness, who spoke with AP.

Oddie Carranza, an eighth grader at the school, said she was bumped into by a boy as he was running by. She yelled at him to be careful, and he supposedly apologized before he kept running.

Carranza said he then ran into the gym where he pulled out a gun in a band instrument case and started firing at students.

"Then he shot up in the sky, then dropped the gun, and then some teacher grabbed the kid that had the gun," Carranza said, according to AP.

Students were then taken by bus to a nearby mall, where their parents were allowed to pick them up.

"We're just grateful for Roswell, RPD, for their fast reaction in getting there and taking care of what they have to take of," one parent, Kathy Sigala, told NBC affiliate KOB at the mall. "We just can't believe that it would happen here."

Two prayer services have been scheduled at Rosewell's Calvary Baptist and First Baptist churches.

Authorities will hold a press conference to address the incident later today.
