The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray took the title for North American Car of the Year on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show.

The win, which was coupled with a Truck of the Year award for the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, made two consecutive years of wins for General Motors. The American carmaker received an award last year for the Cadillac ATS compact sedan, according to USA TODAY.

The updated Chevrolet Corvette was named the winner at Monday's press opening for the 2014 North American International Auto Show.

"The car and truck of the year awards are arguably the auto industry's most coveted," said USA TODAY. "They are chosen by 49 automotive journalists who drove all the vehicles and rendered a judgment."

The Cadillac CTS and Mazda3 were the two runner-ups for the prestigious award; nominees are chosen from "all-new or significantly redesigned" cars from the last year.

Debuted at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, the updated Corvette is a seventh-generation vehicle that was designed to rival world-class sports cars while keeping its classic feel, according to USA TODAY.

The car has a 460-horsepower engine with better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. Rated at 17 miles per gallon for city driving and 29 mpg for highway, the Corvette has a starting price of $51,995.

The Car and Truck of the Year awards are unique since they are given by a collective of automotive journalists from outlets throughout the United States and Canada, rather than a single publication, said a General Motors press release.

The Silverado's honor made the fourth truck win for the Dearborn, Mich.-based carmaker, while the 2014 Car of the Year was the sixth car win for General Motors.
