General Motors reported this week that it sold a record 1.03 million Buicks globally in 2013, a 1 percent increase compared to 2012, according to a company press release.

Buick credited its record breaking sales to new vehicles like the 2013 Buick Enclave and 2013 Buick Encore.

The automaker sold 97,311 small crossover Encore's globally last year, while the new Enclave "recorded its best year of U.S. sales in 2013," according to GM.

The GL8, a vehicle exclusively sold in China, posted an annual sales increase of 9.7 percent.

In the U.S., 42 percent of Buick customers were new to the company and to General Motors in general, according to a company press release.

Buick likely saw a drastic increase in sales compared to 2012 thanks to improving economies in China and North America as well.

The previous high for Buick models was 1 million, which it reached in 1984. No vehicles were sold in China that year however, and 941,611 vehicles were sold in the U.S., according to Nick Richards, a GM spokesman.

GM total sales rose 7.3 percent in the U.S., selling approximately 2.6 million vehicles. Company global sales will likely be released towards the end of January.
