A Texas woman was struck and killed by her own car Sunday morning in a bizarre accident that occurred after she hit a barrier and got out to check the damage.

The woman, who has not been named by authorities, was driving on a Houston interstate when she reportedly lost control of her vehicle and hit a concrete barrier, ABC 13 reported.

"Our witness said she was just driving along and lost control, so we don't know what the cause of the initial accident actually was," said Sgt. J.R. Roberts of the Houston Police Department.

After crashing into the barrier, the woman got out to survey the damage to her gray Chevrolet Impala and was walking the North Loop of the westbound interstate.

A witness reportedly began yelling at the victim to get off the highway and back into her car right before another vehicle crashed into the Impala.

When the black Kia sedan hit the vehicle that had crashed, the Impala then struck the woman in a domino effect.

The woman was thrown into the air and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police have ordered toxicology reports to determine if she was impaired before the accident. Richard Arroyo, 24, was driving the Kia and has been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to ABC 13.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic fatalities in alcohol-related crashes rose 4.6 percent in 2012 for 10,322 deaths. These fatalities accounted for nearly a third of traffic-related deaths in the United States.

On average, one fatality related to alcohol-impaired driving happened every 51 minutes last year. The likelihood of being struck and killed by an impaired driver is about double on the weekends, as 30 percent of fatal crashes that occur on weekends are alcohol-related compared with 15 percent during the rest of the week.
