2014 Audi R18 Will Have Laser Headlights

The new Audi R18 e-tron quattro will feature laser headlights in a first for the most famous endurance race in the world.

Using a blue laser beam that back-lights a yellow phosphorous crystal lens, the lighting system send a white beam from the headlights, High Gear Media reported.

According to Audi, the laser system gives the car more homogenous lighting, and the company plans to use the technology in production vehicles someday.

"Laser light is monochromatic, so it doesn't project across all areas of the spectrum like the light emitted from conventional sources," High Gear Media noted. "This creates greater light density and a more precise beam."

The 2014 Audi R18 will feature the same turbodiesel hybrid powertrain as the 2013 model, but it will include a new electric turbocharger and a chassis that's 100 pounds lighter.

The model is now in its second race year after winning last year at Le Mans.

The Audi R10 TDI was the first hybrid race car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans and was voted one of the most important Le Mans racers of all time by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest jury.

BMW is another automaker developing laser headlights. The German carmaker has laser-light technology it plans to use in production of the 2015 i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, High Gear Media reported.

According to BMW, the laser headlamps are a move toward better energy conservation since lasers produce around 70 percent more light per watt compared with an LED unit.

The energy savings are especially significant for electric vehicles like the BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid convertible slated for release next year, Jalopnik reported.
