Audi will introduce new laser-light technology that it believes will "open up completely new possibilities for our production models in the future."

The technology will be introduced with the new 2014 Audi R18 E-tron Quattro.

Audi has not confirmed if or when the technology will be offered for other vehicles as of press time.

Automakers like Audi and BMW believes the technology offers improved visibility and uses less energy than normal headlights.

BMW claims to be the first automaker to offer the technology on a mass-produced vehicle. The automaker debuted laser-light technology on the European-spec option of the 2014 BMW i8.

"A blue laser beam backlights a yellow phosphorus crystal lens through which the light beam is then emitted," Audi said recently in a statement. "This new light source provides even more homogenous lighting of the road."

Audi is no stranger to incorporating new lighting technology on their vehicles however. The 2014 Audi A8 in Europe comes equipped with new Matrix LED headlights, designed to block out light aimed at oncoming vehicles while continuing to light up the road for the driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been yet to approve of the new laser-light technology, so there is no set timetable for when we could see vehicles using the new lights on U.S. roads.
