CNET has chosen the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 as the Tech Car of the Year.
The new model "shows forward-thinking in every aspect of its being, and highlights the kind of technical advancement that gave the world adaptive cruise control," CNET said.
With an advanced adaptive cruise control system, the new S-class has "near-self-driving capability." Mercedes-Benz has also added a new steering assist system to allow motorists to drive hands-free in slow traffic, according to CNET, which called these technologies the precursors to self-driving cars.
Other technological advances featured in the S550 are a strong V-8 engine with direct injection and turbochargers; "comfortable" air suspension; total LED lighting and a 3G data connection built into the car.
Besides the Tech Car of the Year, CNET named members of this year's Car Tech 10, "a set of inconsistent awards for various achievements in automotive technology."
The S550 also won "most popular," garnering more interest from CNET readers than any other car this year. The Cadillac ATS and the Jeep Grand Cherokee came in closely behind.
The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV was honored with CNET's "future on a budget" award, citing the vehicle's all-electric drivetrain and about $27,000 listing price.
CNET's "tech exec special" award went to the 2012 Tesla Model S, which was apparently popular with the tech elite, especially in the San Francisco area.
"The car has become a common sight around Silicon Valley, with more and more taking up parking slots at the tech giants," CNET noted.
For "gorgeous design," CNET selected the sleek Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, which features a fixed glass roof that dips in the back and a new "R" trim level.
Looking to the future CNET chose self-driving cars as best "future tech" and the Volvo Concept Coupe as the best concept car.
Of the Volvo Concept, which debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show, CNET said, "We love the idea of Volvo coming out of its 'safe and dull' shell and building something exciting."
