Facebook Launches Video Ads That Will Play in Newsfeeds

Facebook, which recently topped $100 billion at market value, is about to make even more money by selling video ads that will automatically play in browsers.

The social network announced on Tuesday that it will be selling video ads by the end of the week, "thereby making this the worst social media Christmas ever," PolicyMic reported via The Wall Street Journal.

The 15-second video ads, which will stream in users' newsfeeds, will start showing up by Thursday and will likely help Facebook tap into the $66.4 billion TV ad market.

While users aren't going to be thrilled to see the video ads, Facebook is attempting to make the transition as smooth as possible.

According to the official announcement, the videos will play automatically without sound and won't interfere with data plans for users who are on their phones. Ads will automatically download in the background when a mobile device is connected to WiFi so users don't go over their data plans.

The announcement was somewhat vague as to how many ads will be visible on a page and noted that the first videos would be an "initial, limited test." The video ads will begin playing when users scroll down a page and stop playing if the user keeps scrolling.

"This format isn't intended for every video ad or Page post video on Facebook," the announcement noted. "[I]t meets specific needs for certain marketers with certain objectives. We'll continue to refine this new way for brands to tell stories on Facebook to ensure the best experience for people and marketers.

Facebook didn't stipulate how much marketers will pay to be featured in the new format, but The Wall Street Journal reported in August that pricing would be $2 million a day.
