18 Suspects Charged by NYPD in Car Theft Ring, 311 Vehicles Stolen

The New York Police Department has charged over a dozen suspects involved in a high-end car theft ring that spanned throughout the Tri-State area, according to CBS News.

Police have confirmed that at least 18 suspects stole and resold 48 luxury cars worth approximately $2.4 million.

"They were good at their job," said Lt. Christopher Gately of the Queens auto crime division, according to The New York Times. "We were just better than them."

The charges were announced by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown after an 18-month investigation.

Most of the vehicles were taken from dealerships located in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey, Brown said. In total, they stole 311 cars worth an estimated $15.5 million, according to police.

Stolen models ranged from a $196,000 Bentley convertible and a $105,000 Mercedes Benz.

"The cars were being brokered and sold in Queens to various brokers, dealers and middle-men," NYPD Deputy Inspector Joseph Kenny said to 1010 WINS.

The supposed thieves changed vehicle identification numbers, registered the cars with forged titles, and used brokers to resell them.

The 18 individuals have each been charged with "enterprise corruption, grand larceny, forgery" along with other charges, according to Brown.

"The ring of thieves arrested in this case treated driveways, dealerships, parking lots and other locations like their personal showrooms," Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said in a statement.

Three of the suspects are also facing drug charges.
