Microsoft Co. has sold over 2 million Xbox One video game systems since being launched on Nov. 22, catching up with Sony Corp's PlayStation 4, which was released a week earlier, according to Reuters.
Microsoft said this week it took approximately 18 days for Xbox One's global sales to go past the 2 million mark.
"We continue to be humbled and overwhelmed by the positive response from our fans," says Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of strategy and marketing for Xbox, in a statement. "We are thrilled to see sales of Xbox One on a record-setting pace."
Likewise, Sony confirmed last week it took 15 days for PS4 sales to reach 2.1 million.
The Xbox One is on sale in 13 countries, and the company claims it is selling quicker than its predecessor, the Xbox 360.
Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said the console is sold out at most retailers, according to Reuters.
"We're manufacturing as fast as we can (for holiday shoppers)," Dennis said in a statement recently, according to Reuters.
The Xbox One is sold for $499 in the United States, and PS4 is available for $399. Each system claims to offer improved graphics for "increased realism" and faster processors for "smoother play" according to Reuters.
With the Xbox One, Microsoft hopes to not only entice gamers but appeal to a broader consumer base of TV fans and music lovers with its interactive entertainment features and media applications.
Robert W. Baird & Co analyst Colin Sebastian said he expected shipments of 2.5 million to 3 million consoles for both the Xbox One and PS4 by mid-December.
"Our checks suggest there is strong demand for next gen hardware among both game enthusiasts as well as holiday shoppers, and most retailers still have open orders for both platforms," said Sebastian, according to USA Today.
