Tesla Motors is set to open its first Supercharger station in Michigan this week.

The St. Joseph, Michigan location was decided on since it will allow owners of the Tesla Model S to commute between Detroit and Chicago without worrying about running out of power.

Two more Supercharger stations will be opened in the Motor City, said the automaker in a media advisory.

The Supercharger station is located at 3260 Niles Road in St. Joseph, near the intersection of I-94 and I-196, according to Tesla.

Tesla Superchargers allow Model S drivers to charge up their vehicles for free between cities along "well-traveled highways in North America," said the automaker recently.

Tesla's network of Supercharger stations has been expanding over the last year or so, to help eliminate the fear of being stranded on the side of the road with nowhere to go to recharge.

"This year has already been one of tremendous growth and expansion throughout Europe for Tesla and Model S," said CEO Elon Musk in a statement.

Tesla hopes to cover 98 percent of the U.S. by 2015. In total, the company is hoping to have 100 Supercharger stations in the U.S. and Canada by 2015.

Six new Supercharger stations were installed in Europe in August.
