One person died and more than 50 cars were involved in a massive pileup in Pennsylvania around noon on Sunday that was likely caused by winter weather, local outlet WPVI reported.

After a two-vehicle crash, one of the drivers got out to check on the people in the other car when a passing vehicle hit the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

At least 56 cars were involved altogether after about a dozen vehicles crashed before the accident scene in the Morgantown area.

Local officials blamed a major snowstorm for the incident, which left 30 vehicles that needed to be towed and shut down the Pennsylvania Turnpike for nearly seven hours.

Drivers like Bobbi Lupkin, 57, of Mechanicsburg, Penn., sat in traffic for most of the afternoon.

"The truth of the matter is nobody is doing a thing for us," Lupkin told ABC News.

Brothers Josh Lobach, 21, and Andrew Lobach, 22, decided to make the most of the situation and ordered a pizza. The college students, who were on their way back to South Carolina, coaxed a nearby pizza place to deliver the pies to the nearest overpass.

"It took some convincing," Andrew Lobach, a college sophomore, told ABCNews.com.

The pair even made some extra cash after they realized they could sell slices to other stranded travelers. At $5 a slice, the brothers met with such success that they ordered four more pizzas.

"We had a lot of thumbs up even when they weren't buying," Andrew Lobach said. They also handed out water bottles for free.

Lupkin said traffic finally began moving again around 6 p.m. When she passed the section of highway where the accident occurred, she saw cars facing all directions.

"If I was 15 minutes earlier, I would have been in the middle of that," she said. "I feel blessed. Sitting for five hours is one thing. To be in that mess ... that's pretty scary. I feel very lucky."
