Florida Bear Attack Nearly Kills Woman While Out Walking Her Dogs

A Florida bear attacked and seriously injured a woman on Dec. 2 while she was out for a walk.

The woman was attacked by a female yearling bear while out for a walk with her dogs. A bear believed to be the one that caused the incident has since been captured, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife officers.

Officials said the bear is only 75-100 pounds, but almost killed Susan Chalfant, 54, during the attack, according to CNN.

Since the attack earlier this week, police have searched the area for other bears to prevent another incident from occurring. An investigation could also help officers determine if the animal they captured was the one involved in the attack.

After the bear walked away, Chalfant ran to a nearby neighbor's house for help.

The neighbor dialed for police assistance to report the bear attack and said Chalfant's face was "covered in blood" according to CNN.

"She's pleading for quick, quick help. She's in severe pain," said a caller to a 911 dispatcher.

Chalfant was still recovering from injuries suffered during the incident as of press time.

Police are not sure what caused the bear to attack the woman, as they have not been able to talk to Chalfant yet.

"There were no witnesses to the attack, and we have not been able to speak to (the victim) yet, so we don't know exactly what happened," said Karen Parker of FWC in a statement.
