"Family Guy" fans around the world are generally displeased with the way this weekend's episode went down, as Brian Griffin, the pet dog of the show, was (spoilers) killed after 12 seasons.

"Damnit Brian, you can't die," said Stewie Griffin to his friend as he was dying. "We were going to do so many things together. We were going to become windsurfers. I was going to be a little better than you but we were both going to be good!"

As Brian was preparing to play street hockey with Stewie, he was hit by a speeding car right in front of the Griffin's house.

Minutes before his death, Brian helped Stewie get rid of his time machine, meaning the odds of Brian returning is highly unlikely.

"You've given me a wonderful life. I love you all," said Brian on his deathbed.

It didn't take long for the family to move on however, as they had a new pet dog before the episode was even over.

"Family Guy" producer Steve Callaghan said that the show's creator Seth MacFarlane is a big fan of "The Sopranos" and thought it would be fun to create a character based on Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri, played by Tony Sirico. So they decided to replace Brian with a new dog named Vinny, who is voiced by none other than Sirico himself.

"Well, this was an idea that got pitched in the writers room and it sort of caught fire, and we thought it could be a fun way to shake things up," said Callaghan, according to E! News. "As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters."

To many fans, Brian was the heart of "Family Guy," and now that he is gone, the show might also be over soon as well.

MacFarlane said to "The Hollywood Reporter" back in 2011 he'd be okay with ending the show anytime since he's busy with other things.

"Part of me thinks 'Family Guy' should have already ended," he said to the magazine. "I think seven seasons is about the right lifespan for a TV series. I talk to fans, and in a way I'm kind of secretly hoping for them to say 'we're done with it.' "

While some viewers of the show want to give Vinnie a fair shot, most are not pleased with the writers killing off one of the most popular members of the Griffin family.
