Thanksgiving Day Travel: 43.4 Million Americans Expected to Travel Next Week, Down From Last Year

AAA has predicted that 43.4 million people in the U.S. will travel 50 miles or more from home next week during the Thanksgiving Day weekend.

Approximately 44 million people traveled during the Thanksgiving Day weekend in 2012, so if AAA's projection comes true, the number of travelers will decrease about 1.5 percent.

"While the economy continues to improve, the sluggish pace of the recovery is creating uncertainty in the minds of some consumers and therefore AAA is projecting a slight decline in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year," said AAA Regional President Brad Roeber in a statement.

The Thanksgiving Day holiday begins Wed., Nov. 27, to Sun. Dec. 1.

Ninety percent of travelers or 38.9 million people, will travel by automobile during the holiday, a decline of 1.6 percent, according to AAA.

Holiday air travel is expected to decline 3.7 percent to 3.14 million travelers from 3.26 million in 2012

"Additionally, while we do not yet know the full impact that the recent tornadoes will have on travel from the areas affected across Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, we do know that the impact for many in that region is substantial. It is too early to determine how travelers across this region will alter their travel plans based on the recovery efforts underway," said Roeber.

AAA believes that most drivers will send the least amount for gas this Thanksgiving holiday since 2010.

Drivers across the country can find stations selling gas for less than $3.00 per gallon in the vast majority of states.
