General Motors' redesigned Cadillac CTS has been named Motor Trend's Car of the Year, according to CNN.

"Our judges were particularly impressed by the CTS's responsive powertrains and masterful balance of smooth ride and sporty handling," said Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh, in a statement.

Cadillac bested 21 other new or redesigned vehicles that were also considered for the prestigious award.

The BMW 4-series, Chevrolet Corvette, Jaguar F-type, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Mazda6 and Mercedes-Benz S-class all advanced to the final round.

The CTS is bigger than its predecessor, yet maintained its rear-wheel-drive design that made it one of the most popular vehicles among critics and car buyers alike.

Vehicles were put through 6 different tests, which included: Design advancement, engineering, efficiency, safety, value and performance.

"The CTS's intended function was to take the fight to BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi -- and win. And it has," the magazine said in its review of the Cadillac.

The CTS can be purchased with a 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a 321-horsepower V6 and a 420-horsepower turbocharged V6. The award-winning vehicle is also the first Cadillac to come with an eight-speed transmission.

This is the second time a Cadillac CTS has won Motor Trend's top honor, after the automaker previous took the award home in 2008.
