Hyundai Recall Update: Over 43,500 2009-‘12 Genesis Vehicles Now Involved, NHTSA Responds

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officially announced that Hyundai is expanding its recall of Genesis sedans in the U.S. to address a potential brake issue.

The expanded recall include an additional 16,000 vehicles, bringing the total number of Genesis models affected to approximately 43,500.

In October, Hyundai recalled 27,500 Genesis sedans in the U.S. to replace the brake fluid.

"If the module corrodes, reduced brake effectiveness may result, increasing the risk of a crash," said NHTSA in its summary of the recall.

The vehicles were built from April 30, 2008 through March 28, 2012.

Owners will be sent letters to bring their cars to their nearest Hyundai dealership for brake inspections and changing of the brake fluid with "replacement fluid containing an anticorrosive additive," Hyundai said.

All repairs will be completed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin sometime in December.

At least 23 customer complaints have been received by the NHTSA so far.

At least one crash has occurred as a result of the issue. A driver in Florida hit a stopped vehicle while another had to use the emergency brake to stop, sending the vehicle into a spin at a red light.
