The SEMA awards for the top trending vehicles in four categories were announced on Tuesday in Las Vegas. Ford Mustang took Hottest Car, the Scion FR-S was awarded Hottest Sport Compact, the Ford F-Series won Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV, according to a SEMA press release.
"The SEMA Show has always been the annual event where the newest and most innovative products are seen first," said Chris J. Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. "The SEMA Award celebrates the industry's unique ability to identify and set the trends that influence consumers worldwide."
Now in its fourth year, the SEMA award recognizes the industry's most popular vehicles "as the best platforms for accessorizing and showcasing this year's hottest cars and trucks," said a Ford press release.
"Our SEMA Show exhibitors are industry visionaries who determine the winners of the SEMA Award," Kersting said. "The booth space is a ballot and the vehicles they choose to showcase in their booths are a vote. The most prominent models in each category are the winners."
This year's SEMA exhibition featured more than 2,400 exhibiting companies. The winners were chosen based on product availability.
"While products are available for every make and model, exhibitors are investing more in the Ford Mustang, Scion FR-S, Ford F-Series and Jeep Wrangler than any other vehicles," said a SEMA press release.
Ford exhibited 57 customized vehicles at the 2013 SEMA Show. According to SEMA officials, more Ford Mustangs and F-Series were on display at the giant aftermarket expo than any other new cars or trucks, making them the most popular.
The specialty auto parts market is a $31 billion industry that supports more than 1 million U.S. jobs, according to SEMA.
