Kia is developing a redesigned Sedona minivan that will be introduced sometime next year.

The new vehicle will mark the first significant change to the minivan since it was introduced in 2005, according to the automaker.

Kia said the new vehicle will allow the company to remain competitive with the industry's leaders, the Chrysler Town & County, Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna minivans.

"There will be major changes to the chassis, engine, exterior and interior," said Stephanie Brinley, a senior analyst for the Americas at IHS Automotive, according to Edmunds.

Brinley also confirmed that the new model should be out in the U.S. around October 2014.

The current generation Sedona was re-introduced last spring as a 2014 model. Production for the U.S. version was stopped however so that three areas of the minivan could be re-engineered.

"Stay tuned," said Kia Executive Vice President of Sales Tom Loveless to Edmunds. "That is our minivan entry today and we expect to be in the minivan segment for the foreseeable future. It is fairly stable, 500,000 or so, but if you really look at it, it is two segments in one. Young families occupy one, and Honda and Toyota fight over leadership there."

The redesign model includes: an updated grille, foglamps, and front bumper, according to the automaker. Each Sedona will also feature new storage compartments for iPads and other tablet devices.

The minivan will be sold for a base price of $26,750, including an $850 destination charge.
