A full trailer for "X-Men: Days of Future Past" surfaced on Tuesday to reveal a first look at the new prequel, which is slated for a May 2014 release.
"Days of Future Past" picks up after Matthew Vaughn's 2011 prequel "X-Men: First Class," which chronicled the mutant superheroes' origins as young people in the 1960s, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The cast comprises actors from both the prequel and the earlier "X-Men" films, including Ian McKellen as Magneto, James McAvoy as the younger Xavier, Anna Paquin as Rogue and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Also featured are Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde, Halle Berry as Storm and Evan Peters as Quicksilver.
Adapted from one of the comic book's story lines conceived by Chris Claremont, the film will mark Hugh Jackman's seventh time playing the Wolverine/Logan character, Entertainment Weekly noted.
"This is a character piece, and it's mostly what we showed at Comic-Con," Singer told the L.A. Times Hero Complex on Monday. "It's basically a piece that introduces the characters and the vibe of the film."
Director Bryan Singer tweeted that the film would be darker than its predecessors with higher stakes.
Although there is a great deal of humor, the overall tone is a bit darker than previous films, particularly because of the stakes.

In the new movie, Wolverine is sent to the past to change a major historical event that could globally impact man and mutant kind. The trailer footage shows Magneto directing Logan to go back into the past.
Wolverine has to find Xavier and convince him to turn away from an ambiguous-but-darker path, Yahoo! reports. "Lead me," his present-day self explains. "Guide me. Be patient with me."
"Patience isn't my strongest suit," Wolverine quips.
"X-Men: First Class" grossed more than $353 million worldwide. The new film could see some interesting competition next year, as 2014 is shaping up to be the year of the superhero. Moviegoers can expect "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" in the spring as well, followed by "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Transformers 4" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
