Katie Holmes joined Twitter on Friday, sending her first tweets from South Africa, where she is filming "The Giver," PEOPLE reports.

The 34-year-old actress is playing Jonas' mother in the film adaptation of Lois Lowry's classic book.

"So happy to be on twitter!!!!!! Sending first tweets from South Africa!!!!!" she wrote in her first post from the handle @KatieHolmes212.

"On set today filming the Giver. Love working with director Phil Noyce am so grateful for such a wonderful experience," Holmes added in another tweet.

She also retweeted a photo from producer Nikki Silver of "The Giver" actors. With the caption "our Giver family," the photo includes Taylor Swift, Jeff Bridges, Cameron Monaghan and Odeya Rush.

As of Friday, Holmes had nearly 21,000 followers.

Swift is playing Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Meryl Streep will also star as the Chief Elder, while Bridges will play The Giver.

Holmes is "really excited" to be part of the project, she told E! News recently.

Based on the 1993 Newberry Medal-winning book, "The Giver" is a dystopian novel centering on Jonas, a boy selected from his village to retain The Giver's memories.

Filming began this month, and the film is tentatively slated for a late summer 2014 release.
