Ford and Toyota are currently fighting between one another over who has the top-selling car in the world.

Ford said on Oct. 23 that it had the top selling car for the first half of 2013 based on registration data collected by the research firm R.L. Polk & Co.

The Detroit automaker said it sold 589,709 Focus units from January through June, a 20 percent increase when compared to the same time in 2012, according to the Associated Press.

If this is true, this would mean the vehicle beat the Toyota Corolla, which finished second, though Ford's top sales analyst Erich Merkle could not release Polk's numbers officially yet for the Corolla.

A Polk spokeswoman also confirmed that the Corolla finished second, but couldn't say how many Corollas the automaker sold.

But of course, Toyota is disputing Ford's claim.

The Japanese automaker said it sold the Corolla under a different name, the Matrix, in certain location, and it sells other vehicles that are "identical" to the Corolla around the world as well.

Toyota said it is currently "drawing up a response" to Ford's claims, which will be released within the next week, according to the Associated Press.

If the Focus does beat the Corolla this year, it would mark the second year in a row that Toyota's flagship vehicle failed to earn the top spot as the top-selling vehicle in the world.
