Little Women Movie: Sony Taps Olivia Milch To Write New Film Adaptation

Sony Pictures has set in motion production of a new "Little Women" film, with a screenplay by Olivia Milch, Variety reports in an exclusive.

Produced by Denise Di Novi and Robin Swicord, "Little Women" will be the latest version of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel about four sisters growing up after the Civil War.

Sony also had a hand in the most recent film adaptation, which was Gillian Armstrong's 1994 version starring Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and a young Christian Bale.

The 1994 version made $95 million at the worldwide box office and landed three Oscar nominations, including one for Ryder in the lead actress category. Earlier versions starred Katharine Hepburn in 1933 and Elizabeth Taylor in 1949.

This assignment is Milch's first major studio gig, according to Variety.

The new film will be the sixth movie adaptation of "Little Women," according to IndieWire.

"No word yet if this will stick to the book or try something new, but considering that the 1994 version ... did decent at the box office and turned out three Oscar nominations, something tells us they won't rock the boat," the outlet noted.

Although casting is still up in the air, media outlets have already started buzzing as to who should play the classic characters.

Entertainment Weekly this week shared its dream cast--but, of course, first asked the vital question: "Do we really need another adaptation of one of the most beloved novels of the last two centuries?"

The magazine suggested indie darling Brie Larson as Jo; Mia Wasikowska, who was also the most recent "Jane Eyre," as Meg; up and comer Elle Fanning as Beth; and child actor Maggie Elizabeth Jones as the younger version of Amy.

As for Marmee, mother to the little women, "Julianne Moore stands a good chance, and I would love to see her in a warmer, more maternal role," Entertainment Weekly said.
