2013 Tokyo Auto Show: Mazda 3 Skyactiv-CNG Concept Debut Confirmed

The Mazda 3 Skyactiv-CNG Concept has been confirmed for the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show.

The Skyactiv-CNG Concept is a version of the car that is capable of running on gasoline and compressed natural gas, according to the Japanese automaker.

The Japanese automaker said the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine can be altered for CNG with only small changes.

"Demand for CNG-powered vehicles is increasing all over the world and the Skyactiv-CNG Concept adopts a dual fuel system that runs on both gasoline and CNG," said Mazda in a statement. "CNG engines must burn fuel at high pressure and because the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine already achieves a high compression ratio, it can easily be modified for CNG with only minor modifications."

Mazda has discussed the benefits of CNG vehicles at length, claiming they lower emissions by about 20 percent compared to similar vehicles with gasoline engines.

The automaker has not said if a production 3 CNG model will be released as of press time.

Other companies like General Motors have discussed the benefits of CNG as well lately.

Just last week, GM said it will sell a version of the 2015 Chevrolet Impala that will run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas.

The Impala will go on sale next summer, according to GM.
