One of General Motors' fuel cell research vehicles recently topped 100,000 miles of real-world driving, a huge milestone for a hydrogen-powered vehicle.
Through using renewable hydrogen, GM's vehicle saved approximately 5,260 gallons of gasoline, according to a company press release. At $3.50 per gallon, that equals a savings of over $18,000.
The custom designed 2007 Chevrolet Equinox was produced as part of GM's 119-vehicle Project Driveway program, which started back in 2007. GM's fuel cell test fleet vehicles have driven close to 3 million miles, which easily tops any other automaker to date.
In total, the vehicles have saved 157,894 gallons, or $552,631, of fuel, according to GM.
Todd Goldstein from GM's Advanced Technology Demonstration Program was driving the fuel cell vehicle when its odometer reached 100,000 miles, according to GM.
The senior project likes to drive the vehicle from the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance to communities like Oxnard, Santa Clarita, Victorville, Palm Springs and San Diego.
"The Fuel Cell Equinox is an attention-getter everywhere I go," Goldstein said. "The people who ask me about it are very enthusiastic about the technology."
GM is currently in the middle of constructing a new Fuel Cell Development Laboratory in Pontiac, Mich., where most of the company's fuel cell production work will occur in the future.
"We believe hydrogen fuel cell technology holds tremendous potential to one day help reduce our dependence on petroleum," said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM's global fuel cell engineering activities in a statement. "The resilience of our test fleet and new research partnerships are helping us reach this goal."
