Saber-Toothed Whale Found at Venice Beach, Was Barely Alive When it Washed Ashore

A whale that has a dolphin-shaped head and saber-like teeth has been discovered deceased on Los Angeles Venice Beach, according to the Associated Press.

The 15-foot-long female whale washed ashore on Oct. 15, according to The Los Angeles Times.

A truck was required to haul away the whale, which is currently being examined at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum to figure out how the gigantic whale died.

The Stejneger's beaked whale isn't usually seen in the wild, as it typically dives deep in the waters to feed on small fish and squid.

The whale could have migrated from as far south as Northern California. How the whale wound up in L.A. will probably never be solved.

"This is the best," said Nick Fash, an education specialist for the Santa Monica-based environmental group Heal the Bay, according to the Associated Press. "(Previous finds) aren't anything like this. This is a treat."

The whale was alive when it washed ashore, said Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue.

Its body was covered in bites from so-called "cookie-cutter" sharks that feed by "gouging round pieces of flesh" from bigger animals, according to Wallerstein.

More information on the whale is expected to be released after an autopsy is completed.
