Elon Musk Purchases James Bond Lotus Sub, Plans to Make it Work (VIDEO)

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has confirmed he purchased a Lotus submarine car prop from a James Bond movie at an auction last month and plans to convert it into a real car capable of transforming into a sub.

The sub car will be made at a Tesla electric powerplant.

Musk, the CEO of both the electric car company and rocket maker SpaceX, was revealed as the winning bidder at the London auction held on Sept. 9 by car site Jalopnik.

"It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater," says Musk in according to USA TODAY. "I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform. What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real."

The prop car was purchased by Musk for $989,000.

Six different Esprint cars were used for filming, but only one was turned into a submarine car, according to RM Auctions.

Bidding started at 100,000 pounds at auction.

The auction house previously sold an Aston Martin D85 used by Sean Connery in "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball" for 2.9 million pounds in 2010, according to Reuters.
