A boat carrying 15 migrants from Haiti and Jamaica capsized off the coast of Miami, killing at least four of the six women aboard, the U.S. Coast Guard said according to Reuters.
Eleven survivors were found by Coast Guard crew members holding on to the hull of the 15 to 20 foot power boat after getting a call from a 911 dispatch center in Miami.
"We believe this is a case of human smuggling and, at this time, the authorities are investigating the case," said Coast Guard spokesperson Marilyn Fajardo to Efe.
One of the survivors was taken to a hospital for medical attention but was later released into the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, local police said.
Commander Darren Caprara, chief response officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, said to reporters that it was hard to determine the exact number of people aboard the "overloaded vessel" when it capsized.
The ship capsized approximately seven miles off Miami. Caprara said a search operation had been called off on Oct. 16.
"We have every reason to believe that we have found all the people at sea. The final number was 15. It turned out to be nine males and six females," Caprara said, according to Reuters.
Caprara said the bodies of the four dead women were discovered when the Coast Guard righted the vessel.
